Hyundai Instar: Threat to Dacia Spring and Citroën ë-C3?

The Korean manufacturer will expand its range with a small electric SUV derived from its Casper model. It is expected to have a range of 355 km with a starting price of €22,000.

Hyundai confirms the arrival of a small 100% electric urban SUV in its lineup. It will be called the Hyundai Inster, a name chosen by Hyundai because it combines the notions of “intimate” and “innovative” with “Casper”. The Casper is a small thermal SUV measuring 3.60 m, powered by a three-cylinder gasoline engine with 67 and 100 hp, sold in Korea since 2021.

The Hyundai Inster will be unveiled at the end of June at the International Busan Motor Show in Korea. The manufacturer has only revealed its highly graphic lighting signature for now, resembling the Kona Electric and the Ioniq 5 and 6.

Hyundai has already announced a range of 355 km according to the WLTP cycle, but has not specified the battery capacity. In Korea, the Hyundai Kia group offers the Ray EV, which has an 86 hp electric motor powered by a 35 kWh battery allowing for 205 km of range. The Hyundai Inster is expected to have better specifications.

This mini SUV will enter the A segment, where it will compete with the restyled Dacia Spring (3.73 m). The Spring has been completely redesigned with a more SUV-like appearance, but it has a range of around 220 km. The Hyundai Casper is expected to start at €22,000. Currently, the Citroën ë-C3 starts at €23,300 with a range of 324 km. However, Citroën has announced a more affordable version for 2025 priced at €19,990, but the range has not been disclosed.
