Some car manufacturers do not believe in electric sports cars, while others see it as an opportunity. This is the case of Anton Piëch, who continues to believe in his electric sports car despite the challenges.
At the 2019 Geneva Motor Show, the Piëch Mark Zero concept appeared. An electric sports car proposal that relies on the family lineage to establish its name. The founder is none other than Anton Piëch, son of Ferdinand Piëch and great-grandson of Ferdinand Porsche…
But the name alone is apparently not enough, and the project starts from scratch with new players. Anton Piëch remains involved, but is now partnered with Tobias Moers, former head of Aston Martin and Mercedes-AMG.
The Piëch GT is dead, long live the Piëch GT
The second proposal adopts a more contemporary style. Gone are the forms tinged with inspirations from the 60s, replaced by sharp lines designed by David Seesing. Interestingly, he is also the designer of the TVR Griffith, another sports car with a troubled destiny.
The performance of this 2+2 coupe has been significantly increased. Power goes from 375 to 745 kW and 1100 Nm. In reality, there are two motors, but with an original configuration, not one per axle, but one per rear wheel. Additionally, each motor is coupled with a 2-speed gearbox.
Piëch Automotive claims a top speed of over 300 km/h and a 0-100 km/h acceleration in 2.6 seconds. The 90 kWh battery capacity (75 on the initial proposal) would provide a range of over 500 km in the WLTP cycle.
However, all of this is still just a proposal that would be released in 2028, two years later than the initial project. Provided that investors are found, which still leaves room for doubt.
The company is Swiss, but production would take place in Canada. In theory, it would be Multimatic that would ensure the start of production, with an ambition of 2000 units per year, increasing to 8000 in the following five years with the launch of a second model.
