Volkswagen ID.7

Volkswagen ID.7

Powerful and smart, the Volkswagen ID.7 is designed for long-distance drivers. But can they actually consider long journeys without constraints?

Based on the well-known MEB platform widely used within the German group, the Volkswagen ID.7 targets long-distance drivers. It incorporates the best available technology from the group, with a 77 kWh battery and a 286 hp electric motor. This setup aligns with the ambitions of the sedan, with relative efficiency. But is it enough to make long trips effortless?

Volkswagen ID.7: a reminder of our measurements

Last week, we published the first part of this Supertest. Here’s a quick recap of the figures:

  • Mixed route: 15.3 kWh/100 km – 503 km
  • Long distance: 21.7 kWh/100 km – 355 km
  • Eco-driving: 9.5 kWh/100 km – 811 km

Volkswagen ID.7 charging curve: a full charge in 27 minutes

The German sedan boasts a peak DC charging power of 170 kW. However, as observed, it can reach up to 190 kW from 15 to 25% charge. The charging curve shows uniqueness compared to other models, maintaining higher power levels for longer. The ID.7 can go from 10 to 80% charge in 27 minutes, with an average power of 128 kW. Reaching 100% takes an additional 20 minutes, totaling 47 minutes for a full charge.

Recovered range: 259 km in 30 minutes

During a 500 km highway journey, the ID.7 showed an average consumption of 21.7 kWh/100 km, equating to an average range of 355 km on a full charge. Based on this, the Volkswagen ID.7 can recover 167 km in 15 minutes and nearly 259 km in half an hour. It stands out among road trip cars, offering impressive range recovery compared to rivals like the Hyundai Ioniq 6.

Volkswagen ID.7 recharge costs

Equipped with a 77 kWh usable battery, the ID.7 actually provides slightly more energy. Charging from 10 to 80% typically delivers 57.8 kWh. With an average price of 0.59 €/kWh on highways, the cost amounts to 13.70 €/100 km at most. This cost is comparable to the Hyundai Ioniq 6, but actual costs may vary based on charging options and energy prices.

Travel time for 500 km: 4 hours 47 minutes

During the highway trip, the Volkswagen ID.7 demonstrated similar consumption to its Korean competitor. Reaching the refueling point with 11% charge remaining, a 23-minute stop was enough to continue journeying comfortably. The total travel time for the 500 km route was 4 hours 47 minutes, at an average speed of 104.5 km/h.

Supertest Volkswagen ID.7: the verdict

The Volkswagen ID.7, a new flagship in the ID range, lives up to expectations. While its size may pose challenges in the city, it offers excellent maneuverability and spaciousness. The powerful electric motor, combined with a quick-charging 77 kWh battery, provides a comfortable range. Despite minor drawbacks in suspension comfort and ergonomics, the ID.7 ticks all the boxes.
