As the “new” Dacia Spring is about to start its career, prices of the first model are dropping in the used car market. Here are the prices and mileages of the first examples, as well as a reminder of potential reliability issues.
Seriously refreshed in the interior and appearance, the Dacia Spring has not changed much in terms of technology. Therefore, the first generation of the Romanian electric minicar is not necessarily outdated. Even though its road performance may not match that of the competition – which is not necessarily excused by its price – the Spring can meet certain needs. One thing is certain, if you can charge at home every day and your daily trips are short and on safe roads, the small Dacia offers the immense advantage of controlling its cost per 100 km. Especially when buying used. Since buying new is not as attractive as before due to the end of state bonuses for most electric vehicles manufactured in Asia, the first generation of Dacia Spring can be found used starting from €8,000. As they are recent cars, the mileage is still very reasonable, mostly under 50,000 km. Many of the listings are for 45 hp versions – the most modest of the two power options – and Business finishes in gray or white. These are likely returns from leasing agreements signed in 2021.
Do not fear this finish, as the equipment is already sufficient. Indeed, you can count on air conditioning, automatic lights, automatic wipers, cruise control, and Bluetooth connectivity. These are essential features that make daily life easier. In terms of range, the Spring does not perform miracles with its 27 kWh battery. While you may reach around 250 km in the city – which translates to about 200 km before needing to recharge – do not expect more than 150 km on the highway and just over 100 km on the motorway. This is good to know when making your choice. In terms of charging, do not expect more than 6.6 kW in alternating current from public charging stations and 30 kW in direct current from fast chargers. Although it may seem limited, since the battery has a low capacity, the charging times are not significant.
Reliability of the first generation Dacia Spring:
– No known issues with the small electric motor of the Spring.
– Safety belts: The rear right safety belt retractor may be defective. A recall has been issued for inspection and replacement. Over a thousand units assembled between April and October 2022 are affected in France.
– Electronics: Some reports of defective dashboard displays and central locking failures.
– Air conditioning/heating: Issues regarding these systems are becoming more common. No solution has been provided yet.
– Charger: Sometimes charging is impossible, and the cable refuses to disconnect from the outlet. A recall has been initiated to address issues with starting the vehicle after charging (charger malfunction with warning light on), affecting 6,000 cars.
– Transmission: Numerous complaints about noisy driveshafts (clunks). This appears to be a known issue.
– Other: The tires are of poor quality and offer little grip, especially on wet roads. The Dacia network seems to struggle to receive spare parts to repair vehicles, resulting in long downtimes.
