For those who think that the rebirth of MG under Chinese ownership (in the SAIC group) has very little to do with the MG of the past, except for the logo, here is a new counter-example. In fact, while the Sino-British brand revealed a roadster last year that echoed the tradition of the brand’s two-seater convertibles, such as the MGB, the MGF, and the TF, now there is… the coupe!
The 2023 Goodwood Festival of Speed was the opportunity to discover the final version of the Cyberster, an imposing 100% electric roadster. The 2024 edition of the event that began on Thursday, July 11, is a chance to discover a surprise: the Cyber GTS Concept. Is MG replaying the success of the MGB from the 1960s and its almost immediate introduction of the MGB GT coupe?
Two extra seats
One thing is certain, the MG Cyber GTS Concept is really a surprise. But as the name suggests, it is currently just a concept. A show car that still drives as it takes part in the rolling parade at Goodwood, where the brand celebrates its 100th anniversary. MG is paying tribute to the limited edition MGC GTS Sebring, which had the best result for the brand at the 12 Hours of Sebring in 1968. More than half a century later, the Cyber GTS is presented as a 2+2 coupe, with two additional seats at the rear, delivering power to the rear wheels. As for the rest, we don’t know yet. However, given the similarity with the Cyberster roadster, we can easily imagine what’s under the hood.
Production dependent on public reaction
If we know that this new concept is indeed 100% electric, we can assume that it uses the 77 kWh battery from the existing convertible. And since the coupe is rear-wheel drive, we can assume it incorporates the 340 hp developed in the rear-wheel-drive roadster version (a 500 hp 4-wheel-drive version also exists). As for the range, it could be slightly higher than the announced 580 km, as a coupe is generally more aerodynamically efficient and lighter. All of this is just speculation.
To find out more, we will have to wait for MG to decide whether or not to put this Cyber GTS coupe into production. The manufacturer does not hide the fact that it depends on the public’s reaction. Especially during its first appearance at Goodwood. As for the Cyberster roadster, not yet planned for France, the first deliveries in the UK are scheduled for August!
