Arizona State Senator Justine Wadsack was arrested in March for speeding. She was driving at 114 km/h instead of 55 km/h. Today, she refuses to sign the ticket she was given, plays the victim, and tries to justify herself by saying that her Tesla Model S had no battery left.

This American Senator Tries to Evade Her Sentence

In Arizona, the traffic laws are quite strict. Motorists caught driving at 20 mph (approximately 32 km/h) or more over the posted speed limit face a sentence of 30 days in prison, one year of probation, a $500 fine, and 3 points off their license. The state senator was arrested last March for a significant speeding violation.

In a zone with a speed limit of 35 mph (approximately 55 km/h), Justine Wadsack was caught driving at 71 mph (around 114 km/h). Today, she tries to defend herself and refuses to sign the ticket. To the local police chief, the senator claimed to be the victim of “political persecution” and insists that she was not speeding.

However, according to Mike Rankin, the city prosecutor of Tucson, “prosecuting someone for endangering others by driving at speeds exceeding 20 miles per hour over the posted speed limit within city limits is not persecution.” He further stated that “the Tucson police still intend to charge her” and that “it should happen soon.”

To justify her speeding, the senator explained to the police officer that she was in a rush to get home because the battery of her 2015 Tesla Model S was almost depleted, even stating that she only had 6 km of range left. This, of course, makes no sense as electric cars consume more energy as speed increases. Even if she had a more credible reason, such as needing to use the restroom, it does not change the fact that she was driving way too fast.
