Volkswagen has unveiled the seventh generation of its mid-size utility vehicle, the Transporter. The model will offer plug-in hybrid and 100% electric versions.

After a long teasing period, Volkswagen has released the first official images of the new generation of its Transporter, along with its first derivatives such as the Caravelle (dedicated to troop transport).

The 7th Transporter is a new product of the collaboration between Ford and Volkswagen in the utility market. VW has taken the base of the Transit Custom, revising some design elements, especially the front end, which resembles that of the latest Multivan with a slim grille between the horizontal headlights. At the rear, the lights form a hook.

The new Transporter measures 5.05 meters in length, which is 15 centimeters longer than the previous 6.1 model. The wheelbase gains 10 cm to 3.10 m. A version with an additional 40 cm wheelbase will also be available. The vehicle widens by 13 cm (2.03 m without mirrors), improving the width of the cargo area (1.39 m) and making it easier to transport Euro pallets. In standard configuration, the loading length is 2.60 m. The loading volume is 5.8 m3. With the extended length and height, up to 9.0 m3 can be achieved.

In addition to the van, Volkswagen will offer multiple configurations, including the van Plus (van with a second row of seats), Kombi (people transport). There is also the Caravelle, dedicated to shuttles. The Transporter and Caravelle will also offer a PanAmericana variant, with a rugged look featuring generous raw plastic protections.

The dashboard is based on the Ford’s, with a few details added. It includes a 12-inch instrumentation and a large 13-inch touchscreen.

By taking the base of the Transit Custom, Volkswagen logically adopts the technical offerings of Ford, which still heavily favors diesel, which remains essential for this type of vehicle. However, there is also a 232 hp plug-in hybrid version available.

Additionally, the Transporter will offer electric variants, with three motors of 136, 218, and 286 hp, paired with a 64 kWh net capacity battery. A smaller battery option will follow.
