A crossover version to raise the volume?

The Alpine A290 is about to get even sharper with the addition of an electric motor on the rear axle. This will enable an all-wheel drive system that could give it an edge in performance. Recently, the Alpine A290, a revised version of the Renault 5 E-Tech electric car currently offered in 180 and 220 hp variants, is set to receive a boost. It will be equipped with an electric machine integrated into its rear axle to significantly increase power while providing an all-wheel drive system.

This modification will allow the Alpine A290 to compete with several rivals, such as the Cupra Raval, the Lancia Ypsilon HF, and to a lesser extent, the Alfa Junior and Abarth 600 small SUVs. The Italian models will have 280 hp available. Alpine might also take advantage of these 4×4 versions to introduce a crossover model, with increased ground clearance and urban adventurer accessories.

Following the concept of the Alpine A110 Sports X presented in 2020, the brand could introduce a similar design philosophy to the Alpine A290. Instead of having skis on the rear window like the Lotus Esprit Turbo from James Bond, a spare wheel could be added, reminiscent of the Renault 5 Le Car Van. This model was a leisure variant of the Renault 5, designed by French car body manufacturer Heuliez to sell to companies.

This trend of transforming hatchbacks into SUV-inspired models is not new, as seen with the Audi A1 City Carver, now known as the Audi A1 Allstreet. The designers at Alpine could follow this trend, making the Alpine A290 a stylish and versatile option in the market. This approach could appeal to customers looking for a sporty yet practical vehicle for everyday use. Thus, the Alpine A290 with an electric motor could be a game-changer for the brand in the competitive automotive market.
