BMW has unveiled the fourth generation of the X3, which offers a plug-in hybrid version 30e xDrive. The electric iX3 has been discontinued, with another model set to take its place.
In October, BMW will make its return to the Paris Motor Show. Visitors can get a sneak peek at the brand new fourth generation of the X3 at its stand. This SUV is one of the top-selling models for the German automaker, making this renewal crucial.
Despite its success, BMW has completely redesigned the X3 with a smoother and slightly more refined silhouette. The headlights now slant downwards to meet an enlarged kidney grille. The grille features bars placed both vertically and horizontally, a design choice that is sure to attract attention.
At the rear, the license plate is now integrated into the bumper, and the tailgate features a crease below a rib that spans the span of the taillights. Despite only growing by 3 cm in length to 4.76 m, the X3 gives the impression of being larger, especially with a more vertical rear end and deflectors along the rear window improving aerodynamics.
A Concept-like Interior
The clean and minimalist design extends to the interior, with a significantly less cluttered dashboard that resembles a concept car. The air vents are hidden, and the number of buttons is reduced. There is no longer any decorative element in front of the passenger, just a seamless design that continues into the doors. The X3 also features the Curved Display, which combines a 12.3-inch instrument cluster with a 14.9-inch central display. It also adopts the colored bars seen on the larger models. The PHEV model offers a trunk volume of 460 liters, an improvement of 10 liters.
Among the available powertrains at launch is a plug-in hybrid option, named 30e xDrive. This model combines a 190 hp 2.0-liter gasoline four-cylinder engine with a 184 hp electric motor integrated into the 8-speed transmission. The total maximum power output is 299 hp, with up to 450 Nm of torque, allowing for a 0-100 km/h acceleration in 6.2 seconds.
This version is equipped with a 19.7 kWh net capacity battery, enabling an electric range of 81 to 90 km according to the WLTP mixed cycle. Charging is done using an onboard 11 kW AC charger.
What about the electric option? The iX3 is not being renewed directly. Instead, BMW will introduce another model from the new “Neue Klasse” family, with a dedicated electric platform, set to launch in 2025.
The plug-in hybrid X3 is already available for order, with deliveries starting in the fourth quarter of 2024.
