BYD is spending without limits to expand its presence worldwide. The Chinese manufacturer aims to become a major player in the European market, across all segments, including high-end and luxury.
Presented for the first time in Europe at the Munich Motor Show in September 2023, Denza intends to establish itself on the continent with a complete range. The premium brand of BYD initially introduced the large D9 minivan, which may not necessarily meet European needs. Then came the N7, showcased at the latest Geneva Motor Show in February 2024.
This well-equipped SUV with rich finishes directly competes with Mercedes EQE SUV or Audi Q6. It is available in a 230 kW rear-wheel drive version or a 390 kW all-wheel drive version, with a 91.3 kWh battery. The WLTP cycle range has not been disclosed yet, but it is expected to be under 550 km for the dual-motor version and between 550 and 600 km for the rear-wheel drive. However, charging is limited to 150 kW. In China, like the D9, BYD installs two sockets, allowing simultaneous charging on two stations to reach a total of 230 kW. This feature may not be available in Europe.
High-End Offerings
But Denza is not planning to remain a brand with just two models. Two more models are set to join the European lineup soon. These models may be unveiled at the Paris Motor Show.
Following its debut at the Beijing Auto Show in April, the grand Z9 GT will make its way to Europe. A blend of sedan and wagon, the 5.18 m long Z9 boasts a three-motor version, one at the front and two at the rear developing 710 kW / 966 hp… A vehicle that will solidify the brand’s premium ambitions and that BYD has not hesitated to compare to some of the most elite European models…
FangChengBao Now Under Denza
In its promotional ads as a Euro 2024 partner, BYD prominently features its four brands: BYD, Denza, FangChengBao, and Yangwang. Yangwang was present at the Geneva Motor Show. However, FangChengBao will not be marketed outside of China. But its models will be. The Bao5 will become a Denza model in Europe. This plug-in hybrid 4×4 will try to compete against the Land Rover Discovery or Defender, as well as the Ineos Grenadier, with its angular style and emphasis on true off-road capabilities.
These are the new prospects for Denza in Europe… but the brand has yet to start expanding its distribution network or announce the prices of its vehicles. In the future, Denza may introduce a more traditional sedan, a larger SUV than the N7, while the Bao family is expected to see the launch of a big Bao8 and a small Bao3… The story is far from over.
