Porsche had planned to sell 80% electric cars by 2030. But the Stuttgart-based firm has announced that it will soon revise its targets downwards.

“Too ambitious”: this is how Porsche describes its ambitions for electric cars. In the spring of 2022, the German automaker had indicated that it aimed to achieve 80% of electric car sales by 2030.

An objective driven by the excellent start of the electric Taycan sedan within the range. With 40% of electrified cars at the time, Porsche had a clear roadmap.

The rate was to reach 50% in 2025, and 80% of electric models by 2030. However, in 2024, several negative signs emerged, including a slowdown in sales.

Despite the promising start of the electric Porsche Macan, the numbers did not take off. The Taycan’s difficulties in the market during the first half of 2024 were to blame. Porsche is counting on an update of the sedan to revive it.

Objectives that “depend” on two criteria

Earlier this week, Porsche revealed in a statement that its objectives were moving away. The automaker placed as a condition a resurgence in public demand for its models.

“The transition to electric vehicles will take longer than we thought five years ago.” However, the brand then admitted that the demand was “slower than expected.”

“Our product strategy is such that we could deliver more than 80% of our vehicles fully electric by 2030. This will depend on customer demand and the development of electromobility.”

However, Porsche CEO Oliver Blume is not overly concerned. He believes that the Taycan will achieve better results towards the end of its lifecycle. He explains that the sales cycle has a “V-shaped curve”, with a dip in the middle of the lifecycle.

He also noted that the new electric Macan “has recorded a really pleasant number of orders”. However, the targets for 2030 are likely to remain difficult to achieve.
