Fisker went bankrupt, but another manufacturer is already rushing to acquire the name of its only electric model. Indeed, Lucid is trying to acquire the brand “Ocean,” perhaps for its future mid-size electric SUV.
Will we soon see a Lucid Ocean on the market? It’s not impossible. The American brand has filed a request with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). This filing took place on May 30, 2024, even before Fisker, the manufacturer who previously held the rights to the Ocean, officially went bankrupt.
However, it is important to put this into perspective. Lucid has already filed and canceled several trademark applications with the USPTO in recent years. We have seen names like “Air 1,” “Palos,” and “Pure Spec” being abandoned in favor of the Air, the brand’s electric sedan, and the Gravity, its future SUV.
A Lucid Ocean after Air and Gravity?
Lucid has also filed other active names like “Earth,” “Cross Air,” “Air Cross,” or “Airspace.” The California-based startup plans to manufacture a third model by 2026, a mid-size SUV that currently has no name. With an Ocean, Lucid could continue to align itself with an elemental theme. It makes sense.
Unfortunately, Fisker will no longer be able to do anything about it. The company recently filed for bankruptcy protection. The production of the Fisker Ocean has been halted, and the brand is at risk of disappearing. Unless Henrik Fisker returns with a third project in a few years, but that is not currently in the works.
