Honda has launched the Honda CR-V e:FCEV in Japan, a hydrogen fuel cell version. This variant, only available through leasing, promises 620 kilometers of range.

Several years ago, Honda had introduced a hydrogen model powered by fuel cell technology. It was a sedan called Clarity Fuel Cell, which the brand discontinued in 2021.

The reason for this decision was the company’s shift towards electric vehicles. In 2023, the Japanese automaker decided to return to hydrogen. This decision is now materialized in a new model.

This new generation hydrogen system is featured in the new CR-V. The SUV is equipped with two hydrogen tanks of 53 and 56 liters each. It is powered by a 17.7 kWh lithium-ion battery.

The refueling of the tanks can be done in about three minutes. The model also offers electric charging. The onboard charger with a power of 6.4 kW allows for a recharge in approximately 2.5 hours.

Honda claims a range of 621 kilometers, provided the battery is charged and the tanks are filled. The battery alone offers only 61 kilometers of range in WLTP cycle.

The synchronous motor delivers 130 kW of power and 310 Nm of torque. While currently available in Japan, the hydrogen SUV comes from the factory of the joint venture between Honda and GM in the United States. Honda Japan has announced a price equivalent to 47,500 euros.
