The new MG EHS is not the only SUV that the Anglo-Chinese brand will launch in the coming months. In addition to an upcoming ZS, a new 100% electric model, the MG S5, is also expected.
The success of the MG 4 has made headlines. Therefore, it is surprising that the Anglo-Chinese brand did not capitalize on these results by entering the lucrative SUV market. However, the new MG EHS continues with a plug-in hybrid offer because a fully electric model is on the horizon. The MG S5 has just been unveiled by the Chinese Ministry of Industry (MIIT).
Based on the same platform as the MG 4, this 4476 mm long SUV (1849 wide, 1621 high, and 2730 mm wheelbase) is less radical in style. The lower bumper is similar to that of the Cyberster roadster, while the clearly visible lights are only daytime running lights. The main lights are concealed in the lower part of the X-shaped front end.
The technical details are still scarce. The 125 kW / 170 hp engine that powers the entry-level MG4 is confirmed, and the announced masses of 1615, 1685, and 1740 kg suggest multiple battery options. The MG S5 could feature the 51, 64, and 77 kWh packs of the MG4. The S5 will be priced slightly higher than the sedan. However, its debut could be heavily affected by import taxes.
The S5 is the brand’s second SUV or crossover to adopt this type of naming, following the MG S9 presented at the Geneva Motor Show last February. The upcoming Marvel R could be named S7.
