New Kia EV3 Electric: Our Review on Board the Peugeot E-2008 Rival

Long before the presentation of the concept car of the same name, The Automobile Magazine had discovered the EV3 in the land of the Morning Calm, a little over a year ago. This prototype surprised us with its nonconformity and its design. This feeling remains as you take a closer look at this final model, for which orders will be open in September, with a scheduled arrival in dealerships by the end of October.

It is expected that this EV3 will boost Kia’s electric offensive, as the 2021 EV6 profile made a sensation but struggles to find buyers in France today, while the boxy EV9 was not designed for our regions, although it remains one of the few 7-seater all-electric SUVs currently available.

An SUV specifically for urban spaces

With its 4.30 meters in length, the EV3 specifically targets the urban SUV market, which remains the most promising in Europe. This Kia aims to compete with models like the Peugeot E-2008, Volvo EX30, Cupra Born, Volkswagen ID.3, and even the new Scenic. The interior design of the EV3 is from the Kia Style Center in Namyang, Korea, while the exterior was designed in Frankfurt.

This EV3 promises to prioritize aerodynamics, with a drag coefficient of 0.267. From the car’s body design to the flush handles and front and rear air flow optimization, Kia has ensured the smooth passage of air around the EV3. The gently sloping roof ends with a long trunk spoiler that hides the rear window’s angle.

A sleek and functional interior design

The EV3 has a well-organized digital display, which includes a 12.3-inch screen in front of the driver and a second touchscreen of the same size at the top of the central console, with a 5.3-inch element between them for climate control. Physical controls for temperature and ventilation are also included for easier access.

Additional features in the interior include a large space for wireless smartphone charging and a sliding table between the front seats, the usage of which is yet to be defined.

Simple but effective modularity

The materials used in the EV3 are focused on recycling and are well arranged, providing a sense of simplicity and space. The rear seats offer easy access and ample space, although the modularity of the EV3 remains basic, with a fixed seat bench and foldable 2/3-1/3 backrests. The 460-liter trunk comes with a double floor and a roller blind cover.

The EV3 is based on the E-GMP platform of the group and is equipped with a 204 hp electric motor, positioning it between the E-2008 (156 hp) and the new Scenic (170 and 220 hp). The EV3, with a 400 V architecture compatible with fast charging, will offer two battery options: a 58.3 kWh battery for a range of 410 km and an 81.4 kWh battery for up to 600 km, making it a strong contender in the segment. Pricing by Kia will play a crucial role in attracting demand for electric family cars.
