Shocking Low Number: Recharging an Electric Car in Buildings

Just over 3% of buildings have a shared charging infrastructure. But installations are finally picking up speed.

While the installation of charging stations in public spaces continues at a good pace (with almost 130,000 points in service by the end of April), the situation in collective housing remains very unsatisfactory, despite the existence of a right to charging. This issue has been highlighted many times, and the first “national barometer on residential collective charging” published by Avere confirms this. This is a real obstacle to the growth of electric vehicle sales in France.

According to data collected by Enedis, the electricity network operator, and AFOR (which brings together specialists in condominium charging), only 3.11% of residential buildings had a shared charging infrastructure as of March 31, 2024. This amounts to 8,383 buildings.

However, there is some reassurance that the situation is finally improving. While the number of equipped buildings is 8,383, the number of buildings that have approved an installation is much higher, at 28,673. This represents one in ten buildings. The improvement can be seen in the increase in installations, with a 15.7% increase in equipped buildings between the end of 2023 and March 2024.

Some residents did not wait for a collective proposal to have a charging solution. According to the barometer, 15,996 individual charging points are deployed in collective housing. The barometer notes that the actual number is slightly higher, as the reported number currently only includes charging points installed by a private operator from AFOR. Avere states that the Advenir program has already financially contributed to the installation of 19,101 individual charging points as of March 31, 2024.
