After a wave of layoffs and a hiring freeze, Tesla has finally decided to recruit new employees. However, this only applies to one department.
In just a few weeks, about 15% of Tesla’s workforce has been laid off. The company decided to clean house in order to reduce costs in a challenging period and to position itself for a better comeback. In early May, the company also decided to freeze hiring: all 3,000 open positions were eliminated at once. This was not a coincidence. Elon Musk has a plan in mind.
The automaker has apparently reevaluated its strategy. New positions are currently being offered on the company’s recruitment site. However, only one department is affected: the one called “Autopilot & Robotics.” As you may have guessed, Tesla is looking to strengthen its teams in the field of autonomous driving and robots. The company confirms its change in strategy and is truly setting its sights on robotaxis.
The end of the automotive manufacturer?
This is an indication that Tesla is increasingly positioning itself not as an automotive manufacturer, but more as an artificial intelligence company. Especially when considering that most of the workers who were recently laid off were related to the engineering and automotive manufacturing activities of the brand. All of this seems to be heading in the same direction.
Not to mention that Tesla’s CEO has abandoned the idea of an affordable electric car in favor of developing this famous robotaxi. To establish itself in this sector, the US company will have to solve the issues of Autopilot and make progress in the field of autonomous driving. Here are some of the job titles for the new positions offered on Tesla’s site:
- Robotics Engineer – Self-Driving
- Fullstack Engineer – Self Driving
- Research Scientist – Self Driving
- Frontend Software Engineer – AI Tooling
- Self-Driving Software Engineer – AI Infrastructure
