The new generation of M5 gets a plug-in hybrid powertrain. But alongside an electric motor, a V8 engine remains present under the hood!

Each new generation of the BMW M5 brings a technical innovation that disrupts fans and customers. The previous model dared to introduce all-wheel drive, while the new model adopts electrification, almost a necessity in today’s automotive industry.

There is no talk yet of a 100% electric M5 based on the i5 platform. Instead, the high-performance sedan is now offered as a plug-in hybrid. Purists will be pleased to find a massive 4.4-liter V8 gasoline engine under the hood, producing 585 hp. It is paired with a 197 hp electric motor integrated into the 8-speed transmission.

The total combined power output is 727 hp with a peak torque of 1000 Nm. The M5 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds. In standard configuration, top speed is limited to 250 km/h, but can be increased to 305 km/h as an option. However, in electric mode, the speed is limited to a maximum of 140 km/h.

Under the hood, there is a net capacity 19.7 kWh battery. With this battery, the M5 can travel up to 69 km in electric mode in a mixed cycle. The battery can be charged with up to 7.4 kW of power using alternating current.

Naturally, with the addition of the battery, the weight of the M5 has increased to 2.5 tonnes. Despite this, the car’s CO2 emissions are below 40 g/km, exempting it from the CO2 penalty, which would otherwise be 60,000 €!

The M5 retains its all-wheel drive system. For purists, there is a “2WD” mode that sends all power to the rear wheels, with the option to completely disable the stability control. The car also comes equipped with rear-wheel steering, enhancing agility for this large 5-meter sedan. BMW has confirmed the upcoming release of an M5 Touring model.

With the V8 engine, the model still produces a powerful roar, emanating through four exhaust outlets. The electric mode allows for silent operation, at least externally, as an artificial engine sound can be reproduced inside the cabin.

The design of the M5 is bold and eye-catching. Standard features include 20-inch wheels at the front and 21-inch wheels at the rear, well-encased under generously flared fenders. The rear end stands out with its massive two-part diffuser. Optionally, various components can be made from carbon fiber reinforced composite material. Inside, there is a unique steering wheel with specific adjustment buttons, bucket seats, and illuminated decorative bars incorporating the traditional M colors.

The price has already been announced: 159,000 €.
