Volvo has finally begun production of its new flagship model, unveiled at the end of 2022! The first EX90s will be delivered in a few weeks.
Production of the EX90 is underway. Not in Sweden, but in the United States. For a few days now, the first units of Volvo’s new large electric SUV have been coming off the lines at the factory near Charleston, South Carolina. The very first one, in Blue Denim color, is actually destined for an American customer.
Finally, because the production of the vehicle has been postponed several times. The EX90 was unveiled in November 2022. In May 2023, Volvo announced a significant delay, pushing the start of assembly to 2024, due to software development issues. In July 2023, it was revealed that Lidar was also causing challenges for the Nordic manufacturer. Ultimately, the first deliveries will begin in the second half of 2024, a year behind schedule.
A few weeks ago, the head of the Swedish brand stated that this delay was not a problem for Volvo. It was even a good thing, as the manufacturer learned a lot from the development of the EX90 and this will benefit future models, which are expected to be easier to fine-tune. The EX90 was not a priority for sales volumes, unlike the EX30.
The American factory near Charleston is relatively new, inaugurated in 2018, but the EX90 provided an opportunity to upgrade it for the electric era. The bodywork and painting workshops have been renovated and significantly expanded, while the factory now has a state-of-the-art battery production line.
