The barometer of sales of used electric cars published yesterday by Mobilians and Avere leaves no doubt: the Renault Zoe remains the best-selling electric car in the second-hand market. A completely logical domination for the Renault city car that started its career in 2013, well before most of its competitors. However, there are more reasons than just seniority to justify the dominance of this model, which has been unavailable in new condition since March but remains a favorite in the used car market. There are several reasons why the Zoe is an excellent choice for purchasing your first electric car.
Affordable Prices for an Electric Car
Launched in 2013, the French city car – manufactured in Flins, in the Yvelines – is obviously overrepresented in the used car market compared to its competitors. With over 5,000 models for sale on the Le Bon Coin website and over 3,000 on La Centrale, there are plenty of choices available to buyers. This puts you in a strong position as a buyer.
If the cheapest Zoe models start at less than €5,000, caution is necessary because in these cases, it concerns the first generations with batteries ranging from 22 to 41 kWh. In absolute terms, this might be sufficient, but the range is not as good as the models from 2020 onwards with a 52 kWh battery. For these models, you should budget at least €10,000 and around €15,000 for very reasonable mileage. While this is significantly more than the early models, if possible, you won’t be disappointed.
Performance and Range on Point
In terms of usage, the Zoe is not outdated. The ranges offered by the 52 kWh battery, in both 110 hp and 135 hp, still rank among the best in the category. You can almost cover 400 km in the city with a little care, and well over 250 km on secondary roads. It’s even possible to surpass 200 km on the highway, despite not being the ideal terrain for this city car. The charging rate of 50 kW in direct current and 22 kW in alternating current is also quite good. We recommend the 110 hp version, which is more than sufficient.
Finally, in terms of driving, the little Renault is not “outdated”. Although its high ground clearance and elevated driving position give the sensation of driving a mini MPV, where a Peugeot E-208 is more agile. Nonetheless, the comfort is satisfactory, and the generally calmer driving experience of electric cars mitigates the Zoe’s minor flaws. However, you must live with limited interior space and a rather high floor in the back, which somewhat penalizes adult passengers.
Not Much to Lose
Ample representation in the used car market, available at very affordable prices for an electric car, generally reliable, and not at all outdated, the Renault Zoe deserves your attention, even in retirement, if you are considering switching to an electric vehicle. It is a pragmatic and efficient first purchase without breaking the bank. In case you are not convinced, its strong reputation will also help with resale, and you won’t have invested too much money. Moreover, don’t forget that it is possible to lease a used car. Consider it!
