Mercedes-Benz EQG will open improved batteries

The electric-powered model of the G-Class could be entitled to batteries with progressed power density.

Even the venerable G-Class will have its 100% electric equivalent. Mercedes confirmed this with the presentation of the Mercedes-Benz EQG concept almost a year ago. However, it will be necessary to wait until 2024, or even 2025, to find the production model in the concessions.

The wait will have an advantage: the Mercedes-Benz EQG will be the first model from Mercedes with a battery of a new kind, which will be taken up later by other EQs. It was announced by the Vision EQXX concept car, which has the particularity of having a record range (more than 1,000 km) without blowing up the size of its battery.

Will Mercedes-Benz EQG dominate the electric cars market in 2024?

The British media Autocar indicates that this future battery is being developed with the American company Sila Nanotechnologies. It will increase the energy density of the cells by 20 to 40% compared to current EQ batteries. Therefore, an advantage is improving vehicles’ autonomy without increasing the batteries’ size.

During the presentation of the EQXX, Mercedes explained that the improvement in energy density comes in part from progress in the chemistry of the anodes, with, in particular, a higher silicon content.
