Xpeng G9 Performance: Between X and Y

Xpeng G9 Performance: A Serious Competitor to Tesla’s Lineup

The Chinese manufacturer Xpeng, founded 10 years ago, has stepped into the market with two 100% electric SUVs, including the high-end G9 Performance model delivering 551 horsepower. This poses a strong challenge to Tesla’s dominance.

The Xpeng G9 Performance, positioned midway between Tesla’s Model Y and Model X, boasts a sleek design aimed at enhancing aerodynamics (CX 0.272). The top-tier Performance version features a distinct logo on the tailgate, 21-inch wheels, and comes with the same comprehensive equipment and design as the Standard Range (78.4 kWh LFP battery) and Extended Range (98 kWh NMC battery) models. Key highlights include an electric tailgate, LED lighting, hands-free access, and a panoramic glass roof. The car can also be controlled via a smartphone app for remote functions, ideal for tight parking spaces.

An Impressive NMC Battery

Mechanically, the Xpeng G9 Performance inherits the same 98 kWh battery (93 kWh usable) and rear motor (permanent magnet synchronous) generating 313 horsepower as the Extended Range model. However, it adds a second front motor, an induction motor delivering 175 horsepower, to achieve a total of 551 horsepower and 717 Nm across all four-wheel drive.

Spacious Storage Compartments

The practicality of the Xpeng G9 extends to its storage options, featuring a large 660-liter rear boot that expands to 1575 liters when the seats are folded electronically. Additionally, it includes a 71-liter front trunk (Frunk) that opens manually similar to a traditional hood.

Premium Comfort for Passengers

The Xpeng G9 leads in rear passenger comfort with generous legroom, ample headspace, and a roomy elbow width, making it suitable for three adults. The rear bench provides exceptional comfort with adjustable seat heating and reclining.

Impeccable Interior Finish

The Xpeng G9 stands out with a high-quality finish, frameless doors featuring soft-close technology, precision body panel alignment, and premium upholstery. The vehicle boasts powerful processors for seamless performance on dual multimedia touchscreens. The integrated OS includes navigation with battery preheating for optimized DC fast charging. An upcoming update may integrate Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The rear passenger screen allows for entertainment while maintaining driver focus with a privacy filter.

Luxury with Performance

Equipped with air suspension, the Xpeng G9 Performance offers off-road drive mode, raising ground clearance by 5 cm and optimizing torque distribution to all wheels. The vehicle’s acceleration, agility, and handling impress, maintaining stability through corners and providing precise steering and braking responses.

Rapid Charging Capability

The Xpeng G9 Performance’s fast DC charging capability, reaching speeds of up to 300 kW, enables a 10-80% battery charge in just 20 minutes. Despite its power, the vehicle maintains a reasonable energy consumption level and offers a range of approximately 400 km depending on driving conditions.

Pricing and Warranty

While the Xpeng G9 Performance starts at €73,990, making it pricier than the Tesla Model Y Performance, its premium finish, comfort features, and aggressive performance justify the cost. Xpeng offers a 5-year or 120,000 km warranty across its range, positioning itself as a contender against established luxury electric vehicle brands.
